GRAND ROUNDS

MEDICAL STUDENT EDUCATION

Judy Lewis, M.D., DirectorThe Department of Psychiatry participates in fully in medical student education at the University of Vermont.  Our current primary responsibilities and activities are as follows:

Neural Science course:  This multidisciplinary course was designed to bring together the subject matter from our former Introduction to Psychopathology course with other areas of neuroscience. It integrates basic science and clinical topics, is given in the spring of the first year of medical school, and has consistently been highly successful. Psychiatry faculty members deliver lectures and both faculty and residents are involved in panel discussions, small group discussions, and standardized patient encounters which supplement the lecture series.

Psychiatry Clerkship: We are part of a 15-week clerkship block, consisting of the clerkships in Psychiatry, Neurology, and Inpatient Internal Medicine.  Students spend a total of six weeks on Psychiatry, which is divided into two three-week rotations. Rotations include Inpatient Psychiatry (at Fletcher Allen and Vermont State Hospital), Community Psychiatry, and the Psychiatry Consultation Service The students also observe a morning of ECT, spend half-days in two outpatient clinics, attend one AA meeting, and take call with the residents. Resident teaching is a cornerstone of the student experience both with day-to-day clinical teaching and in discussion groups/tutorials run by fourth- year residents. Faculty members lead a weekly case-based seminar series for students on core topics in the field, for which students prepare by reviewing on-line teaching materials (modules, films, readings, or PowerPpoint presentations). In addition, four whole-day integrative learning experiences on important topics that span the three disciplines occur during the 15-week clerkship block.

Advanced Integration rotations: During the last fourteen months of medical school, students may choose rotations in inpatient psychiatry (acting internships), consultation psychiatry, emergency psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, outpatient psychiatry, or psychiatric research.

Other medical student education activities in which members of our department are involved include the innovative Bridge Curriculum, the Introduction to Clinical Decision Making course, the Generations course, the Medical Student Leadership Groups, and individual student advising and mentoring.

Finally, several psychiatry faculty members have been and continue to be very active in the process of designing and implementing the new Vermont Integrated Curriculum. This is an exciting time at the University of Vermont College of Medicine, and the Department of Psychiatry occupies a vital, high profile position with respect to current and future medical student education.
