Surgeons at the operating table

We frequently hear residents and fellows say they thought it wasn't possible to experience the diverse learning opportunities of a big city medical center, while living in a place that offers a comfortable lifestyle with unlimited recreational opportunities.

But that's exactly what you'll find at Fletcher Allen and the University of Vermont College of Medicine. Make no mistake, this program is as rigorous as any other in the county. But here, when you're not training with some of the most highly skilled and knowledgeable surgeons in the county, you'll be part of an active and diverse community and live in the beautiful, natural environment of Vermont. It's the best of both worlds.

Steeped in History, Embracing the Future

The Department of Surgery was established well over 100 years ago, and the hospital was the first in the country to be certified as a Level I Trauma Center for both pediatric and adult patients. While our program is rich in tradition, as a university hospital, we remain on the forefront of medicine. Our programs will offer you first-hand experience with:

  • Robotic-assisted surgeries
  • Trauma cases
  • Advanced surgical procedures, including open heart and valve surgeries, complicated brain tumor and aneurysm surgery, kidney-pancreas transplants, deep brain stimulation and a multitude of laparascopic surgeries
  • Top-notch radiology imaging technology

Diverse Opportunities

Because we are a Level I Trauma Center, and a referral center serving a large geographical region, you'll experience a broad range of cases. You'll also learn the unique challenges presented as part of practicing in a rural environment. One key ingredient in the success of our program is its intimate, team-based nature. Here, you'll be a valued member of the department, and have the opportunity to work closely with not only our excellent surgery faculty, but also as part of multidisciplinary teams involving faculty from other specialties. Our specialists are skilled educators, respected researchers and nationally renowned leaders in their field. As a well-rounded program with a full range of sub-specialties, Fletcher Allen/UVM will give you the opportunity to hone your interests and pursue your calling as a surgeon.

Life in Vermont

While Fletcher Allen/UVM provides the ideal environment for your professional and academic pursuits, Vermont offers limitless possibilities for your recreational pursuits. Burlington is equal parts small city and big town, and is consistently ranked among the most livable cities in the country. It's a thriving place where cultural and recreational opportunities abound, where you can be a part of a close-knit community, and where young families can truly feel at home. From the slopes of the Green Mountains to the east to stunning shores of Lake Champlain to the west, there's no shortage of ways to get outside and enjoy the best of Vermont. In short, it's truly a unique and inspiring place to live, work, learn and grow. Learn more.
